During WW2, the French Resistance added the Cross of Lorraine to the white section to distinguish themselves from Vichy France who collaborated with the Axis.

A new government based at Vichy was formed after the Germans defeated France. But the French Resistance, among many others, saw the Vichy government as collaborators with the Germans. The Vichy kept the original tricolor since the government considered itself the successor to the last administration, but the Resistance added the cross to let people know they did not support them.
