In what way is a slave's yearning for freedom expressed in Frederick Douglass' address to the multitude of ships in chapter X of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass? Does the speech arouse the reader's sympathy?

Well, he says that the ships are lucky because they can sail away once their ropes tying them to the dock are cut, but he is forever bound in slavery. If you re-read that part you can easily answer the question. The speech does arouse the reader's sympathy because Frederick shows how much he really does want to escape, and how he feels when he knows he cannot and starts to envy ships. I know it's a little late, but I hope it helps...
