Calculator not factoring properly? When I type; ((y^2/11) - (11/(4y^2))^2 on my calculator it gives me; ((4y^4 - 121)^2)/1936y^4 Any idea why? If I add one to that it gives me some mass complicated fraction, where what I want is; y^4/121 + 121/(16y^4) + 1/2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

other than that, i dunno :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I typed it wrong. Square everything. (((y^2/11) - (11/(4y^2)))^2 \[((y^2/11) - (11/(4y^2))^2\]

There. If you look at that Wolfram link the answer that I want is the third alternative. IT is giving me the first alternative in both Wolfram and my Calculator. Any ideas how to change that?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

you said you want + 1/2, not - 1/2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

typo i assume?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If I added 1 to that it would give + 1/2. Was just a different way of writing the problem, but either way gives me the same form.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

i dont htink ther eis a way to get only one specific altrenative of a problem other than playing it out by hand

OK, damn. Too bad. My calculator just keeps giving really nasty fractions. I guess I can just use wolfram to check and use the alternative forms.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

wolfs got these tabs that if you hover over the ... bottom left corner of something itll give you the option to have a copyable setup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh, awesome! I've wanted to copy in wolfram so often, never knew how. Thanks again for your help!
