that's a physics question :-) but it happens because of small particles in our athmosphere that disperse the short wave lengths (blue) and not the long ones (red).

Our atmosphere is made up of a mixture of many different gases like nitrogen, oxygen, water vapor, etc. When the light from the sun hits our atmosphere, most of the longer wave lengths of light just passes by. However, the shorter wave lengths are absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed energy is then radiated back as blue light in different directions.
