if i have y=-x squared, is it -(x)(x) or (-x)(-x)?

OpenStudy (vishal_kothari):

(-x)(-x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If it's \[y=-x^2\] then it is y=-(x)(x) If it's \[y=(-x)^2\] then it is y=(-x)(-x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you, so im finding the x and y coordinates of y=-x squared. and i wasn't sure

OpenStudy (vishal_kothari):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if i make x a 3 then y would be -9, right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks a bunch

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so in y=-x squared, if i plug in -1 for x, then y is -1?

OpenStudy (lalaly):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay

Directrix (directrix):

Does the equation appear as y = - x² ?

Directrix (directrix):

as opposed to y = ( - x ) ² ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah that is how it appears as in y = ( - x ) ²
