Before any ideas should be communicated to the public, other scientists should check them to make sure the researchers haven't made a mistake. This is called peer review and it's very, very important.

Actually, scientists rarely communicate their ideas to the general public. They publish them in academic journals once the peer review process is complete - but the papers are usually at a technical level that the general public can't or doesn't want to read. So the job of reporting "to the public" is typically done by reporters and science journalists...
