dy/dx=d/dx (x−3)=d/dx(x)+d/dx(−3)=1−0=1 First line: just general taking-the-derivative notation. Second line: we use the 'sum rule', which states that the derivative of a sum of quantities is the sum of the derivatives of the quantities. (I don't know if there is actually a difference rule, or if it means the same thing as the sum rule with subtraction -- maybe you heard of it?) Third line: we use the power rule for the 'x' (derivative of x^n = nx^(n-1)) and the derivative of a constant is 0 Fourth line: simplified.
