4(x + 1) = −12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + 5 = -12 what happens next?

sam (.sam.):

-4

sam (.sam.):

4(x+1)=-12 Divide each term in the equation by 4. x+1=-3 Move all terms not containing x to the right-hand side of the equation. x=-4

i get positive 16 by getting x by itself

So you have 4(x+1)=-12. What you are going to do is use the distributive property and multiply x by 4 and multiply 1 by 4. Once you do that you are going to have 4x+4=-12. To isolate the x value, the first thing we must do is cancel 4 out of the left side of the equation. Subtract 4 on both sides to do this. Your equation is now 4x=-16. To solve for x, divide by 4 on both sides. You now have your answer, x=-4.
