Factor x^2-11x-12

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

(x-12)(x+1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how?

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

make the calcule and will see it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The two factors need to add to -11 and multiply to -12. -12 and 1 do that.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

x^2 -12x +x -12 = x^2 -11x -12

hero (hero):

x^2-11x-12 x^2-12x+1x - 12 x(x-12)+1(x-12) (x-12)(x+1)

OpenStudy (ash2326):

We have \[x^2-11x-12\] Let's find factors of -12, which add up to -11 those are -12 and 1 -12+1=-11 let's rewrite the equation \[x^2-12x+x-12\] take out x common from the first two terms, and 1 from the last two \[x(x-12)+1(x-12)\] so we get the two factors as \[(x-12)(x+1)\]
