OpenStudy (anonymous):

why does an ordinary clock lose time in summer ?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

A pendulum clock, you mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes !

OpenStudy (jamesj):

What's the formula for the period of pendulum?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

It is \[ T = 2 \pi \sqrt{\frac{L}{g}} \] where \( L \) is the length of the pendulum. Now, in the summer, \( T \) increases. Why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the question has nothing to do with that ,,,,,give the answer ?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Yes it does. It has everything to do with the period of pendulum.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

If the period \( T \) increases, then either \( L \) increases or \( g \) decreases in the summer. Now one of those is impossible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

give the answer ?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

g is always constant. Hence L increases. Now why would L increase in summer?

OpenStudy (jamesj):

@MugeesULkaisar , we don't just hand out answers here. It's much better to think the problem through. I am leading you to the answer. We're almost there. You shouldn't give up so easily.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

In a clock, the pendulum is typically made of metal. Now why would L increase in summer? Why would a piece of metal expand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes very good u r getting closer to the answer , com one !

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Don't patronize me. I have connected 3 out of the 4 dots. You can connect the last one yourself.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is simple, u almost answered it , in summer due to high temperature the length of pendulum increases due to which it's time period also increses , hence loses time in summer.
