you can tell whether or not an element is reactive by looking at it's E value. A substance is more easily oxidized on the left hand side of the periodic table and they are more easily reduced to the right side of the periodic table. reducing agents have more negative half cell potentials, oxidizing have more positive half cell potentials. Remember that reducing agents are oxidized and oxidizing agents are reduced. Additionally it is also helpful to remember the mnemonic OIL RIG. Oxidation is loss (of electrons) and Reduction is gain (of electrons.
