f(y) = y + y^2 - 3 Match each value of y with the corresponding value of the function. (Document enclosed below)

I'll do the odds and you do the evens. I'll work through #1 as a demo problem and post. Okay?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yess =D Please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'll post my answers for the evens to check if I am right :o

Directrix (directrix):

f(y) = y + y^2 - 3 f(2) = (2) + (2)^2 -3 f(2) = 2 + 2*2 -3 f(2) = 2 + 4 - 3 f(2) = 3

Directrix (directrix):

When you see f(y) and then a string of symbols after the = symbol, here's what it means (in this case) f(y) = y + y^2 - 3 f of y take the number y and does things to it. f(y) = ( ) + ( )^2 -3 In this case, f take whoever is playing the role of y, adds that "person" to the square of the person and then subtracts 3. That sounds juvenile but it's the way I think about it. ANd, I always make place-holders for what is adjacent to the f, in this case 2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ohh I see so i'm just pluging in the numbers ?

Directrix (directrix):

Correct. Sometimes it will be variables but not now.

Directrix (directrix):

f(-4) = ( ) + ( )^2 -3 This the setup for your #2. Take it away.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

f(-4) = (-4) + (-4)^2 -3 =9 ?

Directrix (directrix):

-4 + 16 - 3 = 9. Yes.

Directrix (directrix):

You have #4 now. It would be good if you showed the steps.

Directrix (directrix):

f(0 ) = ( 0 ) + ( 0 )^2 - 3 f(0) = 0 + 0*0 -3 f(0) = 0 + 0 - 3 f(0) = -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did them all :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

& You did f(2) o.o

Directrix (directrix):

Why are the answers on the question page?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk its from my online course

Directrix (directrix):

Look what I did. I substituted the problem number for the value of x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats cool o.o

Directrix (directrix):

f(4 ) = ( 4 ) + ( 4 )^2 - 3 f(4) = 4 +4*4 - 3 f(4) = 4 + 16 - 3 f(4) = 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did them all right =DD ! since the ones u corrected o.o

Directrix (directrix):

Great. You just need to practice. So do I.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

=) Thank you
