Am I correct in inferring that no current flows from point B to point C in figure 2.97 because there is no return path (i.e., the elements with the voltage sources are effectively an open circuit in respect to the current source?) The Grounded node tempts me to think that there is a current path from point B to the Grounded node.

I think you're correct.  The circuit on the right has no reference point so it is floating.  Therefore the voltage at C = B.  You should be able to completely ignore everything on the left.
