Note that these exceptions all end not just in -a, but specifically in -ma. Most nouns that end in -ma are masculine.

That was a tricky question. Nouns that end in -a are generally feminine. But there's a special subset of these words ending in -ma that are generally masculine. This is true also of words ending in -ta. (I don't know anything about words ending in -pa. Perhaps that's a transcription error?)

Not all masculine nouns ending in -a fall into those two categories. But there aren't that many others, I don't think.
