OpenStudy (bahrom7893):
Cos(42) = 35/y
y = 35/Cos(42)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
but i got a negative number..
Directrix (directrix):
@rini got a negative number..
Would you show your work? That would help in figuring out what is wrong. 35 is positive and so is Cos (42).
Question: Is your calculator set to degrees?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i did 35/cos(42) and got -87.503

Cosine of an acute angle in this right triangle is defined to be the length of the adjacent leg over the hypotenus.
So, Cos(42) = 35/y as Bahrom wrote above.
.743 = 35/y
.743/1 = 35/y
.743 y = 35
y = 35/(.743)
y = 26.005
Directrix (directrix):
To two decimal places, y = 26.01
OpenStudy (anonymous):
it said the right anser was 47.1
Directrix (directrix):
The question now in my mind is "Do you see anything wrong with the work here?
Directrix (directrix):
sin 48 = 35/ y
.707 = 35/y
y = 35/.707
y = 49 .504 which is 49. 50 to two digits.
Interesting.

The answers should be the same. I am working on resolving what ran amok with the calculations.
