what is the domain of f(x) = (1-x)^1/2 + (x-2)^1/2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

all permissable values of x

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1-x >= 0 and x-2 >= 0

OpenStudy (amistre64):

determine the domain for each "part" and intersect them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how? if we put any negative or any positive or even zero then the function goes complex

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how is it possible?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

1-x >= 0 ; 1 >= x <--------------------------> <--------------1 ....................................... x-2 >= 0 x >= 2 <---------------------------> 2------> the parts dont intesect; so your domain is the null set

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok got it

OpenStudy (amistre64):

just because a mathical looking equation can be constructed with notation doesnt gaurentee it has a sensible real solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (amistre64):

For example, we can say: My cat is a dog. Its a proper sentence; but its meaningless as well
