Mjsinger and walkingorgy are right: plant leaves are green because they contain a pigment molecule called chlorophyll. Actually, there are several different kinds of chlorophyll molecule and not all of them are green, but that is a fine point. The chlorophyll molecules all absorb light energy at certain wavelengths and then use that energy to power photosynthesis.
