One of the materials used for my lab was this: 10mL of barley seeds. Does this even make sense? They were in solid form..

Well, it's a stretch. Strictly speaking mLs are a volume unit, so unless you measured out the seeds by computing the total amount of volume inside them all then no, it is not correclt. It would have been more appropriate to measure them out by weight. But if you poured them into some pyrex and measured them that way, well, it's an approximation.

I agree with blues mL's is a liquid measurment you cant measure a solid the same way you would have to juice the barley seed if it was not dried up to even consider this measur them even then its not an exact measurement
