19/2x + 3/5 = 13/2x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The X's confuse me

OpenStudy (phi):

multiply both sides by 10x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

95x+6=65x?

OpenStudy (swag):

x=-1/5

OpenStudy (phi):

\[\frac{19}{2x}+\frac{3}{5}= \frac{13}{2x}\] let's look at 10x times 19/2x: \[10x \cdot \frac{19}{2x}= \frac{10\cancel{x}19}{2\cancel{x}}=5\cdot 19= 95\]

OpenStudy (phi):

do you see that the x's cancel except for 10x * (3/5) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh! Yes i see that :)

OpenStudy (phi):

So instead of 95x+6=65x? you should get 95 +6x= 65 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-5?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes.

OpenStudy (phi):

we multiplied everything by 10x to get rid of the x's in the denominator. It is a good trick to remember.
