What is one half OF five sixths?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[\frac{\frac{5}{6}}{\frac{1}{2}}*\frac{\frac{2}{1}}{\frac{2}{1}}=\frac{\frac{10}{6}}{\frac{2}{2}}=\frac{10}{6}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So , basically , the answer is ten sixths

OpenStudy (amistre64):

basically yes; but you might want to reduce it for proper form ...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so then it would be one and two thirds. Right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

5/3 = 1' 2/3 yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANKS!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Now check this one I did

OpenStudy (anonymous):

one fourth of one half is = one eight. or 0.125

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

hmm, now that i think of it .... i might have had a misguided thought. 1/2 ---- = 1/8 yes 4 so the first one was thought of wrong ... 5/6 --- = 5/12 2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its tough getting old :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait what?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the first one is 2 ?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

What is one half OF five sixths? would have been better if I read it as: What is half OF five sixths \[\frac{5/6}{2}=\frac{5}{6*2}=5/12\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay guide me through the next one two thirds of one fourth ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think that as a decimal its .166 continuing but anyways I need to know the fraction

OpenStudy (amistre64):

\[2(\frac{1/4}{3})=2(\frac{1}{4*3})=\frac{2}{12}=1/6\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks!!!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep

OpenStudy (anonymous):

WAIT !!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Will you help me with just one last problem PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is it an interesting problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well , it all depends on what you think.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

PLEASE just help me Okay so the problem says: you start with a number. Double it. Square the answer. You get 1,296. What number did you start with?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

start with a number "n" double it: 2n square it: (2n)^2 that equals: (2n)^2 = 1296 what is n?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Dont know?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

what would undo a "^2" ? any guesses?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

if; 2*2 = 2^2 = 4; and sqrt(4) = sqrt(2*2) = 2 ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (amistre64):

no, that was an example to get you to consider a strategy on your own ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No but for the example that you showed the answer is 2. Right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

lol, the answer is: a sqrt(..) undoes a ^2; and a ^2 undoes a sqrt(...) 3^2 = 9 ; sqrt(9) = sqrt(3^2) = 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What u r so confusing .

OpenStudy (amistre64):

we have to solve for "n", and im assuming youve been thru these techniques prior to this (2n)^2 = 1296 sqrt((2n)^2) = sqrt(1296) 2n = sqrt(1296) quite frankly, its better if you come to this on your own ... helps to build a math repitiore

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What is n

OpenStudy (amistre64):

n is the number we are looking for
