How do you find the arc length?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

He gives a bunch of examples in that link.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah but all ineed is an equation :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's there in the blue box

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Here's a tutorial as well :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfn4cpkPHUI Other people way smarter than me can explain it better which is why I provided links lol.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thank you :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have a particular problem you're working?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this one: Find the arc length of a sector that is 125° and has a radius of 20 in.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh... so there's no function. Is this for precalc?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

geometry :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh okay! For some reason whenever I hear "arc length" I think of calculus. Here you go! http://www.worsleyschool.net/science/files/sector/calculations.html

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay thank u hahaha

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u work it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Click on the link and tell me how YOU would work it :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol k thnx

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait nm. I read the instructions too fast. not 6.94

OpenStudy (anonymous):

125/360= 2.08 the you go 2*3.14*20=125.6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First find the area of the entire circle. 2*pi*20 = 40pi Okay now divide 125degrees by 360 125/360 = 0.3472 Now multiply 0.3472 by 40pi Arc length = 0.3472*40*pi = 43.63 in

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"125/360= 2.08" You must have accidentally divided 360 over 125.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oops okay thnk u so mcuh!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry for the confusion :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you have to do anything involving finding area of a sector? B/c it looks like the link covers that as well.

Directrix (directrix):

Let x be the arc length in inches Then, 125 is to 360 as x is to the circumference of the circle 25/72 = x/(2*pi*20) 25/72 = x / 40*pi 72 x = 25(40 pi) x = (125/9) * pi

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you
