why might a clot in the lungs occur after a deep vein thrombosis in the leg??????

In this case, clots often form in the deep veins of the leg because blood flow through there is very slow (especially when the person has been sitting for a long time, as on a flight). The veins are really big, so the clots don't lodge there. Instead, they are carried back to the heart, pumped through the right hand chambers and on into the lungs. The lungs are like a sieve - a very fine mesh of capillaries - and the clot sticks there because it is much larger than the vessels they're in.
