devise an experiment which you could do to test the suggestion that veins have more stretchable walls than arteries

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would probably try to find a way to quantify the difference by putting increasing amounts of fluid going through a few different test arteries and veins.. of course you would need a lot of replications to do a comparison by statistical analysis.. then you could do a statistical analysis to compare the expansion of each type based on the amount of fluid you put through..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

increase the amounts until each bursts maybe and then you could do a threshold sort of analysis.. that would be the basic skeleton of the experimental design.. you would want to control for as many variables as possible.. all veins and arteries would need to come from the same organism in the same region of their bodies maybe and you would want them all the same length etc

OpenStudy (anonymous):

statistical analysis what is that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well you would have to add up all the amounts of different fluids and then use statistics (take a simple average of the numbers) for each type Vein vs. Artery, then you could do a t-test probably one tailed (there are lots of programs that will do this online for free) and it will give you a value of P, then if your p=<.05 it means that there is a significant difference between your Veins and Arteries, the higher number is the one that can withstand more fluids going through it, and thus is stretchier than the other.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know if you need to really go into the statistics, for your assignment, but you could just say use the fluids to measure how much each can withstand and then compare.. if they ask you.. then you would probably have to explain how it would be quantified.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that making more sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I personally recommend the statistic analysis program "Origin Pro" if you're going to conduct this experiment, allthou i don't understand why it's common knowlegde by now and the diffrence can be deducted from anatomical diffrences.
