For the purposes of studying gases, the molecules are assumed to undergo elastic collisions (which is fairly accurate). Elastic collisions are ones in which no momentum is lost and no energy is lost by the coliding particles. For gases, this means that the colliding molecules will not not slow down after many collisions (i.e. lose kinetic energy), and the average speed of the molecules (and hence, temperature of the gas) remains constant.
