when sunlight excites electrons in chlorophyll, how do the electrons change?

Electron in a molecule can occupy one of several different energy levels (often called electron shells). Opposite charges attract, so it is most energetically favourable for the negatively charged electron to be as close as possible to the positively charged nucleus. But if some energy is given to the electron, it doesn't need to be so close to the nucleus any more and can occupy higher energy shells...
