solve and graph the following inequality: 3x+11>26

OpenStudy (nottim):

Aww. Advanced Functions. NotTim's Weakness.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

3x+11 > 26 3x > 26-11 3x > 15 x > 15/3 x > 5 So the solution is x > 5 To graph this, draw out a number line and draw an open circle at 5. Then shade to the right of that open circle.

OpenStudy (nottim):

Aw. I was gunna say like try it as if > was a =, but I know that's wrong now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much!!! That really helped i just always forget the formula!

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You're welcome

OpenStudy (nottim):

wait...jim...you got the time to teach me how you did this?

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

The idea is to solve this as if you would any equation. So if you can solve 3x+11 = 26, then you can solve 3x+11 > 26 Just think of the ">" as a "=". The sign will only change if you happen to multiply or divide both sides by a negative number.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i graph it if the sign was the greater to or equal to sign? kidn of like > -

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

Instead of an open circle, use a closed circle.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

except the line would be directly underneath the greater to sin

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be like...|dw:1332643784120:dw|
