why is mitochondria referred to as the "power plant" of the cell?

The mitochondria are where the electron transport chain takes place - which is used to produce ATP, basically using energy built up across a gradient to move electrons from a donor, such as NADH, to a terminal acceptor (usually O2). The energy contained in ATP bonds is what powers the cell.
