Solve (x)/(x+1) < (x)/(x-1)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x / (x+1) < x / (x-1) <=> x^2 -x < x^2 + x <=> -x < x <=> 0 < 2x <= x > 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

last line should say <=> x > 0.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thats confusing..igbal did it different

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

greater than or less than or equal to? what does <=> mean?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thats what im wondering..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

<=> is "if and only if" it's pretty standard maths notation. It means, "the thing to the left being true implies that the thing to the right is true, and, the thing to the right being true implies that the thing on the left is true". It means that all those statements are equivalently correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ig how would you do this problem?

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

ohh iff..the way i do this seems to be inapplicable coz it's x/x+1 <x/x+1 cross multiplication will make it.. x(x+1) < x(x-1) then x+ 1< x-1 which results in a 0<0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh :P lool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think you've written it wrong Igbasallote. x/(x+1) < x/(x-1) x(x-1) < x(x+1) x^2 -x < x^2 + x -x < x 0 < 2x x > 0.
