What happens after a mass extinction, such as an ice age or the extinction of the dinosaurs? Answer Organisms evolve more slowly as they recover from the loss of diversity. Surviving populations reach a state of equilibrium due to decreased competition. The remaining species are able to live longer due to increased food supply. The surviving species evolve more rapidly to fill the newly available niches.

I think...
thanks
Codymalody - It might be that remaining species survive longer due to increased food supply. I'm not sure that evolution suddenly "speeds up" in the event of a crisis. Just my two cents, however I'm not an evolutionary biologist!
