A small child accidentally touches a hot stove and pulls his hands away before he feels the pain and begins to cry. Explain how and why his awareness is delayed?

The question is asking why you dont respond to pain instantly.

The answer deals with how pain works--it must be exchanged into chemical/electrical stimuli and then transferred all they way from your hand down your arm, across an interchange of nerve bundling around the shoulder joint, then to the spinal cord, up the cord to the brain and then exchanged and processed by the brain--then the whole thing happens in reverse in order to react to the stimulus.

As Aadarsh said, it's auctally facinating how this works. You usually don't feel any pain due to the hormonal surge, you start to feel pain when you become aware of it.
Let's say for instance you've a cut, but you don't notice it. Once someone points out you've a cut and you see it along with the blood, the pain kicks in.
