how to find the degree of the following polynomial: 2x3y4 + 6xy2z5

OpenStudy (apoorvk):

degree of any polynomial, is the highest sum of degrees of all variables in any polynomial. so above, you got a binomial. you have the two terms, 2*(x^3)*(y^4) and 6*(x^1)*(y^2)*(z^5) here, x,y,z are the variables. so the sum of the powers in the first term is (3+4), which is '7'. in the second term, the powers add up to (1+2+5) which is '8'. so the second term has the highest degree, and "8" will be the degree of the the polynomial posted here. NOTE: if its stated that any one of the (x,y,z) is not a variable, then we shall not consider it in our calculations. it 'll be treated just like any constant 'k'.
