It is not "necessary". It is mathematically the right way it works. Take 1/6 and 2/5. Adding these two fractions will only work if they are expressed as fractions of a common "number". That common number turns out to be the LCM of 6 and 5 (30 in this case). Now, you have 5/30 and 12/30, which can be added together as they are common fractions. Giving you 17/30.
