The government wants to set new regulations that reduce carbon emissions from vehicles by half. How will this act help with the sustainability of our environment? Answer It will reduce greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It will increase the costs of used vehicles It will decrease purchases of electric or hybrid cars. It will increase the use of fossil fuels

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, do you have any ideas? There's only one answer there that makes sense, I think...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay one second let me take a look at it again

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk i dont get it :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok... do you know why governments keep trying to reduce carbon emissions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know it was B or D you choose

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not really

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know what global warming is or what might cause it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, what causes it? Can you give an example of a greenhouse gas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the rising average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans is wat global warming means

OpenStudy (anonymous):

climate changes causes global warming

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah, but what causes it to rise? What do WE do that might make the temperature go up? What do we put into the atmosphere?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

carbon dioxide is and example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually, global warming IS climate change :) But that's not the cause.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

pollution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, carbon dioxide is a good example of a greenhouse gas. Now... look at the question above: what does it say these new cars will emit less of?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

fossil fuels

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Fossil fuels are what go into the car, not what comes out.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i knew that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So... what happens when you burn fossil fuels? What do you get?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we release to much CO2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, and as you said earlier, CO2 is a greenhouse gas. So if you cut the carbon emissions in half, that is, if you emit half as much CO2, do the greenhouse gases go up or down? And since you were looking at part D, if you want to emit half as much CO2, do you burn more fossil fuels or less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

greenhouse gases reduce and fossil fuels increase

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why do you think we'd use more fossil fuels?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because we have to many cars and it causes alot of pollution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But in this question, you're asked to imagine that all the cars were producing less CO2, that means they're polluting less. If burning let's say... 1 tonne of fossil fuels produces a certain amount of CO2, and you want to produce LESS CO2, should you burn more or less?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It was D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

more

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Are you sure? If eating 100 hamburgers makes you fat, and you want to be thin, do you eat more or fewer hamburgers?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

few

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep, and the relationship between fossil fuels and pollution is the same. You burn a lot of fossil fuels, and you get a lot of pollution. The more you burn, the more pollution you get. So if you want LESS pollution, should you increase or decrease your use of fossil fuels?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

decrease

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct :) Now... look at the question again. What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

:/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree, A does look like the best answer :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay thank you so much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem, I'm glad I could help.
