If you were to find a city, such as Los Angeles, and make each part of the animal cell connect with different buildings, (example: cell membrane of Los Angeles is a factory because the cell membrane controls what goes in and out of the cell while the factory controls what goes in and out of the building) what would the nucleus and vacuole be in the city?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the building cannot be inside the building, it has to be a regular building.

OpenStudy (blues):

Well the nucleus integrates information from all over the cell and determines how the cell responds, so I'd say it would be the city hall.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shouldn't a factory be the Mitochrondium or Rough ER rather than cell membrane....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, exuras, it wouldn't exactly be the mitochondria because the mitochondria controls electricity and the factory doesn't exactly control the cities power. The mitochondria would probably be the power company. :) but good answer

OpenStudy (blues):

How does a factory control what goes in and out of buildings? Speaking for ex, of course.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And the ER would probably be a grocery company that makes food products because you need proteins to make food.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The factory controls what goes in and out of the building because when you need products to enter the factory, the workers control what goes IN. Then, the workers take OUT the products they made to the stores or whatnot.

OpenStudy (blues):

Wouldn't it be more appropriate for ribosomes to be factories, because ribosomes are where all the proteins in the cell are made?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Good question. That could be a possibility.

OpenStudy (blues):

And I'd have a port or shipping depot correspond to the cell membrane, because that is what controls import and export of goods in a city.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm...interesting. You're smart.

OpenStudy (blues):

Yup, that I am. Thanks. :D Given that a vacuole is a large, fluid filled compartment in a cell, what do you think corresponds to it in a city?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome and I would say it would be something like a city pool or something like that. An indoor city pool.

OpenStudy (blues):

An indoor city pool is small. Do you think the city reservoir would be a better choice?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A city reservoir......?

OpenStudy (blues):

Reservoir, where all the city's drinking water comes from.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yea I know. Hmmm...that's a good choice! What would a lysosome be?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think a vacuole is more like a warehouse. They are often used for storage.

OpenStudy (blues):

What does a lysosome do in a cell?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A lysosome kills bacteria in a cell

OpenStudy (blues):

Can you think of anything in a city which that corresponds to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well, the police station takes in the bad people. Sometimes (excuse my language) kills them. That is kind of like killing bacteria.

OpenStudy (blues):

Ouch, I'm not going to take a stance on that one in writing. The police are not supposed to kill anyone. Maybe a jail would be a better analogy, for people who have already been convicted of a crime instead of just arrested for one.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, that. What do you think the golgi body would be in a city?

OpenStudy (blues):

What does the golgi body do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The golgi body is a structure in a cell that receives proteins and enzymes and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, packages them and distributes them to other parts of the cell

OpenStudy (blues):

Indeed it does. It is an intracellular transport system. What does that in a city?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I could probably be a train, but I don't know for a building. You're turning my questions around so I answer them. That's smart.

OpenStudy (blues):

Yup, I am turning your questions around, but I am also giving you some insight on how to answer them yourself. Definitely something in the transport system, maybe one of the big hubs like Grand Central Station.

OpenStudy (blues):

All set, lexi?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did you not get my reply?

OpenStudy (blues):

Ah, hope. Whas it a post or PM?

OpenStudy (blues):

*nope.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Sorry, I think I deleted it. I asked if you were a teacher.

OpenStudy (blues):

No, I am not. :D

OpenStudy (blues):

I can't see myself spening my life handing out hall passes, telling kids it's OK for them to go to the bathroom now or supervising detentions.
