So if someone ends up with an extra toe what would be the reason for it like a mutation in the chromosomes???

Why nobody be answerin my questions

It's actually a congenital mutation, but more common than you would think. I have a polydactyl bengal kitty and know several others who have had cats or dogs with extra toes. In humans the "extra toe" is called hexadactyly (meaning six). Here's a link for more info on MedNet http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=7756

i will say mutation or allelic form of gene rather than mutatation in chromosome. in genetics, penetrance is a term which is more important in such cases

This is an interesting subject - if you look up retinoic acid effects on the limb bud you'll find out how limbs are shaped by the action of chemical gradients. It is possible for a limb to be duplicated in embryonic development: if you can get the link below to work then you'll see some amazing pictures http://dev.biologists.org/content/113/Supplement_1/113.full.pdf
