What is the basic equation that is used to solve work problems?

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

Work = Force * distance

OpenStudy (callisto):

where distance should be the perpendicular distance to the force applied. Though, that seems like physics, not math :S

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

the distance should be the distance parallel to the force. If it were perpendicular the force would be 0. See here for more information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Work_(physics)#Force_and_displacement

OpenStudy (kinggeorge):

I can barely type. That should say: If it were perpendicular to the force, then the work would be 0.

OpenStudy (callisto):

Sorry, my bad ...yup... Fscos90 = 0 ... :(
