Please help!!! The equation of Circle P is ( x − 3)2 + (y + 2)2 = 34 and the equation of circle Q is (x − 4)2 + (y + 5)2 = 52. What is the distance between the centers of these circles?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please explain step by step too, im so lost and i need to understand

OpenStudy (experimentx):

you know how to find the distance right??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no...im very confused...

OpenStudy (experimentx):

if two points are given

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont remember how..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You need to put the equations of these circles in standard form. Divide the first equation by 34 and the second one by 52. (Also, I LOVE the Hunger Games)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just because u said u love the hunger games...and how do u put it in standard?

OpenStudy (experimentx):

they are in standard form

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh XDD I didn't read the whole question >_< sorry. You can just use the center, its inside the parentheses

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if it is in standard form what do you do next?

OpenStudy (experimentx):

well tell me if you know this formula http://www.purplemath.com/modules/xyplane/dist07b.gif http://www.purplemath.com/modules/distform.htm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"Circle P is ( x − 3)2 + (y + 2)2 = 34". The center is inside the parentheses so since it says (x - 3) the x-coordinate of the center will be 3 and since it says (y + 2) the y-coordinate of the center will be -2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As experimentX said, you can then find the center of the other circle and use the distance formula to get the distance between the two points.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yes ive seen that formula before....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

What's the center of the second circle? (x − 4)2 + (y + 5)2 = 52.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it possible for someone to make a visual? Im not really understanding...

OpenStudy (experimentx):

yes use this distance formula .. between two points that you can find by reading two posts above.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

|dw:1333680383426:dw| You want to find the length of that line between the centers there.
