Diana and Joby wrote the following proofs to prove that vertical angles are congruent. Who is correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

now see the attachment

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and here are the multiple choice answers: Both Diana and Joby are correct. Diana is correct, but Joby is not. Joby is correct, but Diana is not. Neither Diana nor Joby is correct.

OpenStudy (phi):

Does either "proof" convince you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

um...no I guess not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but I don't get what they're asking me

OpenStudy (phi):

When you prove something, you start with axioms (taken to be true) and deduce what must be true. So to recognize a proof you need to know the axioms that are assumed to be true. But one assumed truth is "if two different things both equal a third thing, then they equal each other" Diana used that (transitive property of equality) Joby proved the vertical angle theorem by stating "the vertical angle theorem is true because of the vertical angle theorem" (That is like saying, it is true because it is true. You can only say that about an axiom)
