Solve the equation... x^2/12-x/6=1/2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would first multiply by the LCM to get rid of the fractions. Then it will be much easier to solve.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok...I then got x^2-2x=6...I tried putting it into quadratic equation form, but got a weird answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once you got to this point, you have to move the 6 to the right hand side right? x^2 - 2x - 6 = 0. Now you need to find what numbers will multiply to -6 and at the same time add up to -2. Does that make sense?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm...nothing fits this:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok.....so if you can't find anything that multiplies to -6 and adds to -2 at the same time. You can not factor it t find the answers. You will need to either complete the square or use the quadratic formula to solve for x.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you use the quadratic formula, you get (2±√28)/2 (2±2√7)/2 1±√7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nice answer.....hopefully you also showed them how to get the answer........

ahh...EnchantixPixie...I got confused with where to put my 2 in front of the square root sign. I thought I had to multiply it to the 2 in front of the plus/minus sign...thank you:)
