What molecules are the building blocks of nucleic acids?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nucleotides. Nucleotides are made up of a nitrogenous base (A, T, C, G, or U) connected to a pentose sugar (either deoxyribose or ribose) connected to a phosphate group. When the nucleic acid is being synthesized, the free nucleotides exist as nucleotide triphosphates (you've heard of ATP, of course). They are joined together then, by enzymes and the almighty power of the hydrolysis of a phosphate bond ....resulting in the release of pyrophosphate (PPi, or two phosphates bonded together) and the addition of the nucleotide MONOphosphate to the growing chain.
