what would likely cause an inscription on a marble gravestone to become more difficult to read over time? A) Chemical Weathering B) Frost Wedging C) Mechanical Weathering D) Exfoliation
This is the computer science section.
Is there an "All of the above" answer or clarification on how much time passing? :) With Chemical Weathering you have elements, within the main structure, going through changes, oxidizing, disintegrating, all making an inscription more difficult to read over time. Frost Wedging and Mechanical Weathering are essentially the same mechanical process that causes the structure to fracture and break, given enough time those breaks could result in small enough pieces to render the inscription unreadable. The best answer in my opinion is exfoliation whereby the outer layer is shed off, this over time will cause the inscription to disappear.
That it is. This question really belongs in geology or chemistry.
I would say chemical weathering. For instance, acid rain is still a problem is it not? Acid rain would absolutely destroy marble.
My first answer would be to say that all of the process do what the question asks, just with varying degrees of damage and the passage of time.
Yes but I think each process will have a different appearance. For instance "frost wedging" would create cracks, but I would assume that the inscription would still be readable. However, acid rain would slowly eat away until it is too shallow to read.
Yes, which is why frost and mechanical were lowest on my list. However exfoliation is, in essence, the same thing as chemical weathering and would produce the same effect.
I do not really know enough to comment. However, just based on my common knowledge I would put chemical weathering on the top of the list (and probably choose it as the answer if only one choice can be made).
Without the benefit of context, how the lesson was presented, the ambiguity of this question does make it very difficult to answer. For example, if this lesson was presented in a section on the effects of weather, or pollution, or if exfoliation was presented as an effect of chemical weathering I would agree with you completely. Simply put, it is just a guess based on limited information and in the most strict interpretation, they all do damage to varying degrees with a certain passage of time.
This is one of those instances where the community can only do so much and the asker is required to take their advice in context with the lesson being presented to them. Using their best judgement they can then answer the question rather then blindly taking any one person's answer. :)
In any case, as I said I think you should carefully consider how each effect would manifest itself with respect to appearance. For instance perhaps its usually easy to read letters with a few cracks in them. Anyways, good luck.
Agreed.
