A ladder reaches a height of 64 feet on a wall. if the bottom of the ladder is placed 4 feet from the wall, what is the slope of the ladder as positive number? Please help me.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

since slope is defined as the tangent; h/d would be my guess

OpenStudy (amistre64):

Directrix (directrix):

I'm thinking that slope as rise over run would give 64/4 or 16/1 or 16 as the slope of the ladder.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yep

OpenStudy (amistre64):

tan = rise over run too ;)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

given an appropriate orientation of course

Directrix (directrix):

But, then there is this " the slope of the ladder as positive number" The ladder appears as a line with negative slope. I suppose the sign depends on the vantage point.
