Based on your knowledge of gothic works, what do you think the answer may be?
Well, if you look at Edger Allen Poe, he dwelled a lot on mental illnesses, shame, lost love, unrequainted love, death, murder..etc.

Gothic literature is related to Dark Romantic literature. It has certain recurring elements in such types of works. One is a dark, ominous tone and the use of dark elements--rain, storm clouds, shadows, etc. Another is the horror element in the architecture in the literary work. Most of the time we could say that the setting of Gothic literature ends up in this haunted castle or at least some old, dilapidated, but huge place. Case in point, the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. Then we encounter the prevalent use of the supernatural in the work--references to ghosts, spirits, whether they actually appear in the work or not.
