Will we still feel the pain if the afferent neuron is cut off?
Technically not through that particular afferent, but in many cases the innervation of a tissue is to some extent redundant - that is, more than one nerve carry pain signals in the tissue - so it's likely that you'd still feel pain in all those other nerves.
let us be specific: the soma - body of a sensory neuron is in the dorsal root ganglion adjacent to the spinal column. i get that your question is hypothetical, but still technically is relatively not feasible to cut and keep the soma and the axon in one chunk distally to the severing of the neural circuit. what may happen is to sever an axon leaving the sensory neuron soma still connected to the cns and then sure you can feel pain. the extreme and classical example is phantom pain of people who lost a limb, but they feel that their toe (for example) still hurts.
i think ttom is right.
So u mean we will still feel the pain? And what factors will actually relieve the pain, when the neuron cell die completely?
ok i get it now ;)
if the nutron is on the family jewels it will hurt!!!
jewels?
