what is the difference between cycads and ferns?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A lot. Based on what I can find the only thing they truly have in common is being plants. Other than that they aren't biologically related. Granted, I could be wrong, but that's what I've found.

@PsychoTink is correct. Cycads, belonging to the phylum Cycadophyta, are very different from the ferns, belonging to the phylum Pteridophyta. For one, your ferns are seedless plants, whereas your cycads are gymnosperms. You could look into some general differences between gymnosperms and seedless vascular plants, as well. For example, your gymnosperms have a much more prominent sporophyte generation. They also lack flagellated sperm, an indication of their adaptations to living away from water. Hopefully, this'll provide you with a decent start...

Cycads produce cones, while ferns produce spores.
