closed, A fracure which has not come out through the skin. open. a fracture where one of the pieces of bone has punctured through the skin. these types of fractures get infected and require an operation to properly heal. complicated. a fracture in which another important structure is injured such as an artery or a nerve. comminuted. a fracture which is in many pieces. impacted. a fracture which is pushed in on itself. think of this as being like when you step down on an aluminum can.... the can is not in pieces, but it is shortened and much weaker because of the force applied this kind of fracture often happens with the hip bone. incomplete. a fracture in which only part of the width of the bone is broken. greenstick. also known as a 'torus or 'buckle' fracture. very common in children whose bones are more rubbery. the fracture puts a slight dimple in the bone as it is seen on xray. these fractures usually heal well with a simple spint and cast. Colles'. a break in the portion of the arm bone called the radius right as it nears the wrist joint. a person with this fracture will appear to have a wrist which looks like a 'bent fork' as the wrist will be shortened and held at an angle. these require a surgeon to either push the fracture back into place and cast it, but sometimes these are taken to the operating room to fix. butterfly. a comminuted fracture where a free floating piece of bone is present that often looks like the wings of a butterfly. complete. a fracture which goes entirely through the bone from one side to the other. compression. another name for impacted fracture. fissure. a fracture also known as an incomplete fracture with the break extending into but not through the bone. hairline. a small fracture often hard to see on x ray. these heal well with splinting and casting. oblique. the fracture here is diagonal to the long axis of the bone. in other words and oblique fracture would cross the bone at an angle... like one half of the letter X drawn over the bone. spiral. a fracture that is a result of a twisting force applied to the bone. the fracture on xray and in the bone itself looks like a corkscrew. unstable. a fracture which will need either very good casting and complete rest to heal, or one that will need an operation to fix. today most unstable fractures are taken to the operating room where a surgeon will fix them with a variety of devices such as plates and screws. segmental. a comminuted fracture (many pieces) but typically these fracture pieces are large pieces of bone. fragmental. also known as a comminuted fracture as defined above. double. one bone with two separate fractures. sometimes seen with an ankle fracture that also has a fracture near the knee due to the same injury. complex. a fracture with extensive damage to the tissue overlying the fracture site. often seen with crush injuries... these take a long time to heal and healing may be incomplete.
