Simplify 17(sqrt 17) and -9 (sqrt 17)

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

They are already simplified?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it an addition?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[17\sqrt{17} \] \[ -9\sqrt{17}\]

OpenStudy (saifoo.khan):

what we have to do?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Im not sure. all it says is Simplify.

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

8sqrt17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

unless you want to write 17^(3/2), there's nothing to de here. As for the second term, there's absolutely nothing to do at all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or, as jhonyy9 said, you simply add like terms. you have 17 times sqrt(17) and you remove 9 of these (because it's the same term), you're left with 8 times sqrt(17)
