What is the best way to cite an entire paragraph that is paraphrased... in APA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

For starters you really shouldn't be paraphrasing a whole paragraph, maybe a sentence or two from that paragraph, or the main ideas, but the whole thing sounds like a bad idea. Second, how you cite depends on the source. So more info is needed to be able to help you.

I am paraphrasing a large section from a textbook. I have no personnal information or opinions included in the paragraph. So should I place one citation at the end of the last sentence of the paragraph to cover the whole paragraph? It seems redundant to place a citation at the end of each sentence. The way I want to do it (although I don't know if its correct) is: According to (Authors), blah blah blah. More sentences. Last sentence of paragraph (Year of pub). Is that acceptable?

You really should NOT have a whole paragraph be a quote or a paraphrase with no info from yourself. It's a really bad writing technique. You also shouldn't end a paragraph in someone else's words. If you want to use that information you really should pick up the most important points and use those, not the whole thing. Or summarize the paragraph in one or two sentences, and include your own words.

Ok, I appreciate your input. I guess I am confused. I did put this information in my own words, thus paraphrasing. My assignment was to paraphrase a passage from an article and then critique it. So I have two paragraphs, one paraphrasing the article, and the other my personnal critique of it.

There's a difference from in your own words and your own thoughts. I meant your own thoughts. If you assignment is to do that then okay, that's a different story. Then I would say to do: Blah blah says .... (cite).

ok, thank you

In a different situation though you would never paraphrase a whole paragraph without your own thoughts. I thought it was just a regular paper you were writing.

understood

Sorry for the confusion nchisler. xokatexo, I'm not going to do your assignment for you. Someone gave you links to the definitions of the words, you have to at least try it on your own.

@PsychoTink i just need an example of it

When an entire paragraph of material is based on one author's ideas, you only need place one citation at the end of the paragraph.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At the end of the paragraph place a bracket and inside it place the author's last name, year the book or article was published, and the page(s) cited: e.g. (Author, year. page).

thank you!
