What causes the smart score to decrease?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Technically, we generate a raw score from analysis of your actions on the site. Every user gets a raw score, then your raw score is compared to those of your peers. This then yields the relative score that you actually see. Your score can then decrease if your peers are doing more actions that increase their scores, primarily, if those users with raw scores less than yours who then for example help people on the site and increase their scores, surpassing yours. Your score may have dropped since the launch because we tweaked the algorithm to generate the score from the raw scores. The best way to improve your score is to continue to the use the site, helping and asking questions. If you have more questions, please ask!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you're saying my score will actually be dropping because of that random chat thread?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't have a problem with the dedicated SPAM thread, until now. So they post meaningless puckey probably.......10 times as often as I post something relevant and productive. Please tell me that by peers you mean fans and people I'm fan of....and not the entire community...

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Chat has extremely low value in the overall score. Replies have somewhat higher value, but only once per question. Medals are worth a solid amount, though a medal from the asker is worth far more than others, and medals from high-ranking users and moderators are also worth more than medals from others.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not referring to chat. I'm referring to the recently 'discovered' non-official group that bieberlover and ashlee0001 have migrated to for flirting and back n forth nonsense. They award eachother medals in every post.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not pointing fingers, only highlighting examples. That group appears to have collected a following. Perhaps you should have a 'lounge' group, but with disabled SmartScore modifiers.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Ah, yes, we need to crack down on those for sure. However, when we delete content, relevant points are subtracted.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

i hope giving away medals somehow increase smartscore or else users are gonna be clever and not give medals to competition anymore =)))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

When it comes to that content, I'm not worried about any points. Can't a moderator breeze through this joint and just delete whatever/whoever he/she wants?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't see "medals given" anywhere on profile......good point @lgbasallote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The existence of such groups is a topic of concern and discussion among us at OpenStudy. Currently, the profile does not list all the variables that comprise the score

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Look for a more thoroughly public explanation quite soon, but as you'd imagine the more meaningful events on the site, such as people asking questions and interacting with the users who take time to help them are considered more in the calculation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Such groups....there are others? I hope you're not referring to my 'music study' group. If you guys let me, I will annoy the s^&# out of everyone who abuses that group, and report them like a million times.....I want that group to stay alive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have plans.....

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

lol @Dyiliq =))))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Heh, don't worry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't make another one, it has to be THAT one. Just because. It is was made when I became a user, I feel deeply connected to it. Like, paternally...maybe even maternally...even though I didn't create it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But again, there will be a more thoroughly FAQ and "manual" soon. We certainly plan to improve the score -- as we add new features and re-examine certain variables.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I didn't create it, but I've been nurturing it, and protecting it.....a tad obsessively, but hey, that's me so don't judge.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Dyiliq sorry, which group are you referring to?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

http://openstudy.com/study?login#/groups/music%20study It's still being misused a little bit but my plan for this group is as follows:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lgbasallote ^^there it is :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I want this to be a place to post a few different things in the form of Q's: OpenStudy user's original music OpenStudy user's questions about technique, music theory, practice pointers OpenStudy user's questions about recording software/hardware, live performance hardware/software OpenStudy user's questions about equipment troubleshooting/configuration OpenStudy user's equipment preferences and musical influences

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OH, and lyrics support/feedback (I know that this one sounds like it should be in the writing group, but I think it will do better here.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@lgbasallote you have to become my fan before I can reply to you, so says your profile.

OpenStudy (karatechopper):

how fast can the scored go up?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i heard that someone from mods said that unofficial groups aren't included in score, is it false?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Dyiliq that sounds awesome! Imagine if videos could be embedded...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@karatechopper You have control over increasing your raw score. And that is best increased by using OpenStudy. Due to the relativity of the system, it depends upon what other users are doing.

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

lol @Dyiliq you already replied didnt you :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To your PM? @lgbasallote?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're not my fan though :(

OpenStudy (lgbasallote):

yeah you posted the link lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"This user only accepts messages from people they have fanned." I couldn't reply to your PM, that's what I'm saying lol.

OpenStudy (geometry_hater):

does asking questions and not answering any make your smatscore go down too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks to Facebook, you don't need to embed video (that would bog this site down hard anyway) there is an upload/capture video right in the UI

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Last message was @dpflan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not replying to your own questions does not explicitly decrease your score. Your final score is determined relative to those of others users.

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Unofficial groups were not included in the initial score calculation based on your previous activity. Future activity in those groups is *currently* counted, though we may remove that in the near future.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So is it possible then, to be involved in too many groups?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Geometry_Hater Regarding not 'answering' your own question, we encourage askers and answerers to interact with eachother, in a concerted efforts on behalf of the asker to understand the concepts as the answerer explains. Asking a question merely to get an answer is discouraged.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Dyiliq you could be involved in too many groups, basically if you reach some point where you cannot attend to all your groups, but you'll probably find yourself specializing in certain subjects that draw your attention more than others.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Discouraged? I think it should be prohibited....as well as providing answer. Studying=learning. You're not learning anything if someone else gives you the answer. One exception being that they helped to understand how to arrive at the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hmmm....I just MURDER time bouncing between all of them, and the score just stays the same....actually it just went down one...again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Right, currently the scores are recalculated midnights on Mondays, so check back then for a change. Performing live updating of scores given all the events that occur on the site is a tricky problem

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Actually that's not true :) Your score is updated live, but we take snapshots every Monday for your profile.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think a tri-weekly interval would be better, just to bring the suspense down a weee bit:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

your score should be same in all groups that's why you see same score?

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

Your SmartScore is global, rather than group specific.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I also want to ask if score is calculated according to other users does it mean that there can be only one person with 100 score? :D

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

That's correct :)
