You choose at random from the letters A, B, C, D, and you roll a number cube once. What are the chances you get A and 5?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

1/4 x 1/6 = 1/24 provided the one number 5 is on the cube...

Assuming your number cube is six-sided, the probability is 1/24. This is because the probability of picking A (or any other letter) is 1/4, and the probability of picking the number "5" off a six-sided number cube is 1/6, so then the probability of both happening is 1/4 times 1/6, which is 1/24.

lol.. I'd love to see a 5 sided cube

The first and most important observation is that picking a letter and rolling the die are indepedent. That means that the one thing doesn't affect the other: the letter you choose doesn't change the probability of getting a 5. Because of this you can use the product rule: compute both probabilities seperately and compute the product.
